2017-01-30--Tonight's Phone call:

2017-01-30--Tonight's Phone call:

The Congressional switchboard was busy all day.  I finally got through tonight with this message.

Transcript:
Hello, my name is Peter Brezny and I'm a constituent of yours in North Carolina.

I'm calling to ask that you block Donald Trump's nominations for the Secretary of Education, the Secretary of State, and the head of the EPA.

These individuals have significant conflicts of interests for those positions and they are a bad choice for our nation.

Please stop making a mockery of the Republican party by supporting Donald Trump.

Thank you.

Day 3 Cards:

Trump's determination to restart the Keystone XL pipeline seemed like it deserved 3 cards.

But there's so much to choose from today.  I'm calling in to oppose the Secretary of state, education, and EPA nominations.

Here are my post cards for the day:

And a great cartoon from Asheville's own Cohen:

Day 2 Cards:

2017-01-24 cad

Day 1 Cards:

Our Democracy is in a desperate state.  It is contorted by money.  In many states and national districts, the will of the people is no longer being represented.  Individuals must be more involved in their government to correct these mistakes.  The framers of our government did not anticipate this level of corporate influence on policy, and it seems only our voices have the power to correct it.

When the Republicans in congress attempted to gut the independent ethics committee, citizens lit up the congressional switchboard with calls telling them not to, and within hours, they reversed their decision:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/02/politics/office-of-congressional-ethics-oversight-of-ethics-committee-amendment/

Democracy can still work if we participate.

So from The first day of the new Presidency, I have promised myself to write at least one postcard to at least one of my representatives, EVERY DAY.

This blog is a record of those postcards.

My inspiration for starting this came from attending the Women's March on Washington the day after the inauguration.

The Women's March on Washington was the most powerful group experience I've had since attending President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.  Like that day, there were no arrests in Washington DC in spite of it being crowded with more than 500,000 people.  The atmosphere was full of love, support, and a touch of angst but mostly love.  "We the people" and "Justice for ALL" were the resounding themes.

It reminded me that no matter how great our differences may seem, we all have more in common than we have at odds with one another.  We the people, means everyone, and as long as we work within the fair and balanced framework of our constitution, and help it appropriately evolve with the times as it is designed to do, we can survive peacefully together in this still great nation we all call home.

I'm serious about this:

And if we all do it, even just once a week, we can make a difference.
